Xe adsorption on metal surfaces: First-principles investigations

چکیده
In the present paper we report in detail the results of our first-principles investigations of Xe/metal adsorption systems which were briefly presented in an earlier publication. We investigate Xe adsorption on the Mg 0001 , Al 111 , Ti 0001 , Cu 111 , Pd 111 , and Pt 111 surfaces in the 3 3 R30° structure. Our calculations are based on density functional theory within the local-density approximation and generalized gradient approximation of Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof functions and employing the all-electron fullpotential linearized augmented plane wave method. From analysis of the lateral and perpendicular potentialenergy surfaces we find that Xe atoms adsorb in the on-top sites in all cases. We identify a noticeable site dependence of the Pauli repulsion, which largely actuates the adsorption site preference. We anticipate that the identified microscopic nature of the binding between Xe and metal atoms may also be valid for other rare-gas atom/metal systems.

Adsorption of Xe atoms on metal surfaces: new insights from first-principles calculations.
The adsorption of rare gases on metal surfaces serves as the paradigm of weak adsorption where it is typically assumed that the adsorbate occupies maximally coordinated hollow sites. Density-functional theory calculations using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method for Xe adatoms on Mg(0001), Al(111), Ti(0001), Cu(111), Pd(111), and Pt(111), show, however, that Xe prefers lo...

Calculations are presented of the adsorption behavior of Xe films on two different surfaces. One is bulk Cs metal; the other is a graphite surface, covered by a monolayer of Cs. With data obtained from grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, it is found that a Xe wetting transition occurs on the Cs monolayer within the temperature interval 190 to 200 K. On the Cs metal surface, negligible adso...

We demonstrate a model for determining the adsorptive and catalytic properties of strained metal surfaces based on linear elastic theory, using first-principles calculations of CO adsorption on Au and K surfaces and CO dissociation on Ru surface. The model involves a single calculation of the adsorption-induced surface stress on the unstrained metal surface, which determines quantitatively how ...

Water structure and dissociation kinetics on a model open metal surface: Cu 110 , has been investigated in detail based on first-principles electronic structure calculations. We revealed that in both monomer and overlayer forms, water adsorbs molecularly, with a high tendency for diffusion and/or desorption rather than dissociation on clean surfaces at low temperature. Studying water on other n...

It was recently found from ab initio investigations J. L. F. Da Silva et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 066104 2003 that polarization effects and the site dependence of the Pauli repulsion largely dictate the nature of the interaction and the site preference of Xe adatoms on close-packed metal surfaces. It is unclear if the same interaction mechanism occurs for all rare-gas atoms adsorbed on such su...
